The DC-area Diesel Get Together of 11/9...
After a long and ragged effort, the DC-area get together for Diesel folks finally came off last Saturday.
It was a bright, warm fall day. Fort Marcy is a little "pocket park" in Virginia off the northbound George Washington Parkway, and is the site of one of a number of Union redoubts that surrounded Washington during the Civil War. VERY nice...before others arrived saw several deer, and had the Fellini-esque experience of having a woman with a pack of about a dozen assorted dogs appear from nowhere and pass me on one of the trails...like she was herding them north to the railhead after spring roundup...We were under the approach path to National Airport, and as a plane passed above I asked a birdwatcher if he was going to enter a passing "Swissair Airbus A-300" in his log book. As to the Diesels and the folks...a GOOD turnout! "Jim B+" '83 300CD (astral blue); Bill Sohne and family, '83 300d sedan (astral blue). Patrick Atuonah, '83 300SD (anthracite grey), "Peyton 300TD", who drove his black '85 300TD north from Richmond; Margo Smith, '88 300SE (jade); and Greg Spring, '84 300D (sort of bronze). Three of the cars sported the MB hi-mileage award badges on their grilles, and two (Bill Sohne's and "Peyton's") were "heirlooms" inherited from other family members. "Peyton's" wagon was both well-used and stunning in a very unusual shade for wagons...black. Like cars of character should, each sported some distinctive decoration...one showed the insigne of an "underwater medic," one had diplomatic tags. Info on mechanics, body shops, cars for sale, and other scuttlebutt was exchanged, and it was a very pleasant no-pressure get-together. Our local MBCA chapter has had only one event like it, and that was only done once...a Sunday morning "swap meet" where people could relax and sell or swap stuff from their trunks and garages. We need get togethers like this REGULAR, IMHO. Maybe some vintage guys could be invited. To everyone...I enjoyed your company, hope you keep in touch, and hope we can get another meet like this together not too far in the future. PS...could whoever said a family member had a 240 possibly for sale contact me? PPS...SOMEBODY had a digital camera...can you upload your snaps, please? |

im sure you'd get a good turn out if you did it again, or if someone else did it. eric
