603 serpentine belt tensioner

I read the shop manual section on checking the serpentine belt tensioner. It basically says to check for play. I don't notice any play but the tensioner clicks as it rotates about the mounting bolt. Is this right?

Thanks,
Sixto

It clicks? Could be the shock or the bearing. Disconnect the shock and rotate it then see what happens.

BJ300SDL, it clicks with the shock and spring disconnected.

The tensioner arm, and shock, are both known to have very short life spans. You test the arm by disconnecting the shock and rotating it on the main pivot. It should rotate smoothly with no clicking or "sticky" spots. It also should not be leaking (I've seen the bearing seal fail and leak grease/oil). If it's not right, REPLACE it... once the bearing fails, it cocks sideways, and can tear up the timing case cover (MAJOR pain to replace that, usually can't be repaired.) When replacing it, either use blue Loc-Tite or a non-permanent thread sealer, as the hole is open into the crankcase cavity. DO NOT under any circumstances use red Loc-Tite, as I have seen other people recommend!!! The manual specs OmniFit Orange, but good luck finding that.

The shock fails often too, makes a nice rattling noise. Easy test is to press on the side of the shock body with a stick (or your fingers, if you are REALLY careful) while the engine is running. If the noise goes away, it's a bad shock. I've personally seen new (aftermarket, Bilstien) shocks fail in 20kmi. I recently was told the aftermarket shocks suck, and only the OE "dealer" shock will have a decent life span, due to different internal valving. YMMV, etc.

HTH,
