Caliper Question for 85 300TD

Have a 1985 300TD. Have a leaking front break caliper. Have taken it out of the vehicle and have searched this forum for how to replace the seals. Didn't really find anything helpful. Its a ATE not a BENDIX.

Question, should it be diassembled into 2 halves to fix the seals?
Have worked on calipers on motorcycles before, but was just wanting to make sure if there was anything special that I would need to know about Mercedes calipers.

Thanks,

Dave

The hardest part is getting the cylinder out of the housing. Replace the o-ring seal, and be careful not to damage when pressing cylinder back into housing. Place rubber dust cover seal, with heat sheild, fill unit up with brake fluid and ensure there is no air in housing, and reinstall. Go to you local Large Auto Parts store and buy a Haynes Manual for your car. It has a step by step procedure with pictures. PS, buy lots of brake cleaner spray and clean caliper very good.

DO NOT separate the caliper halves! Use low pressure compressed air to "force" the pistons out, with a block of wood in between them or something. Here's a link to late model Mercedes caliper repair service document for 1992-up fixed calipers, although it doesn't apply specifically to your 1985 the general procedure is similar:

Thank You

Sure do appreciate the information. I just got my CD manual, but I was just on the verge of taking the 4 bolts on the top of the caliper off to see if it needed to be split in 2 to do the seal replacement. Sure appreciate the answer, may have saved me a lot of headache.
