Well, i doubt its the pump. They didnt even mention the auxiliary pump. Could be the monovalve, the temp. sensor on the dash, the ACC, or any number of things. She didnt mention overheating, so I would thinnk the pump to be the least likely suspect.
OH, yeah, $500 for a pump? Someone needs to email them a link to fastlane!!

What Wallknight said. Those guys are way off with everything except the low coolant. But MB's have a wierd climate control system.

Those guys tend to be right on most of the time, but I don't think they are too fond of MB's so I am sure they will be way off on the diagnosis.

Unfortunately I don't get to hear them any more, but I remember about 12 years or so ago, they were complementary toward Mercedes Diesels. They seemed to consider them as the best example of a long lived car.

If they'd lay off the nitrous oxide and the silly putrid gigly laugh track and get serious about the auto issues they would be worth listening to.

Once upon a time they were worth while now its just endless diatribe. I no longer consider them anything more than cheap jokesters using automitive issues as a fuzzy focal point. Many a times they are down right scuzzy. They are as useful as the rube dude with a comedy show where he does strange things to cars and gizmos on PBS one saving grace, the TV show is positioned as funny and so inane innuendo and off beat processes are par for comedy. The TV show is down right funny after a few glasses of wine, a pack of beer or a few stiff drinks. But the clampit brothers well I feel they have overstayed and either get serious or move along to pure comedy.

Click and Clack show is a waste of the airwaves and NPR bucks.

personally, i love listening to their banter and cackle laughs. i believe that's why their show is so sucessful for the large part. people who don't even care about car problems and solutions tune in for the show because it is fun. thats why my mom listens and i know for a fact she doesn't know a thing about cars or care! but yea, im sure they are losing people who want serious in depth solutions. but come on, really... are you going to rely on two radio talk show people and a 3 minute on air diagnosis to solve a serious car problem? no, you'd go to a mechanic who has to fix the thing anyhow.

I think they really are knowlegeble but they spend all their time trying to be funny and laughing at their own jokes. I guess it's hard to have a serious car advice show though. Saturday mornings on the local talk radio show used to be filled with call in advice shows on gardening, computers, house repair, and cars, but they cut the local car guy several years ago.

Having a W124, I'd say they are pretty much on the mark except for the possiblity that the aux circ pump is the culprit rather than the main water pump. The 602 is one of those engines that can hold air forever, so low coolant could easily result in low circulation through the heater core at idle.

About time for a head gasket, too!

I love the guys on Car Talk. Of course, they aren't perfect, get real, they aren't actually looking at the cars! They aren't very knowledgeable about MB diesels, either, but hey, they don't claim to be MB trained techs, either.
