What is the problem, specifically.
On a 190D (also 60x engine) it is about 30 minutes from start to finish to remove the old one and to put a replacement in. The older 123's in my opinion take substantially longer. Procedure: Loosen serpentine belt and remove from alternator pulley. Disconnect the alternator wiring on the back of the alternator. Remove the two bolts that hold the alternator to the alternator housing attached to the block. Remove the alternator. Jovan

The problem I'm having is getting the belt loose. Does anyone know how to do this? It's a w124 603.133 engine.

There is an idler pulley that needs to be released and then the belt will come off easily. If you look at the black plastic looking pivot on the tensioner you'll notice there is a hole near the top. Put a large screwdriver (phillips head works best) in the hole and lever it so as to take pressure off the spring. You can now easily remove the bolt that retains the spring and release the pulley. The pulley stays attached but the pressure is off the serpentine belt so it can be easily removed. Sorry, this description is not very good since I am doing it from memory but it will make sense to you when you look at the tensioner.

Thank you very much. I was really starting to get frustrated with that stupid alternator.
