Next: Won't start after long drives. What the ...
Ok, this makes no sense. My '84 300D started a new and very annoying habit.
Starts fine in the cold morning air. Starts fine after short drives around town. Ten, Twelve times, maybe more, in row. Lights never dim, instruments and accessories never falter. However... After long drives (30-60 miles or more) I stop the car and come back fifteen minutes later and the solenoid goes "click". "Click" fifteen, twenty, maybe more, times in a row. A couple of times, luckily the car went ahead and fired off and it will always start if jumped or hooked up to a battery charger. What the $%#@ is going on? Got back from a 45 mile drive a little while ago. Pulled into the driveway and stopped the engine. Tried to restart. "Click" Disgusted I went inside and watched the football scores. On a lark went back out maybe an hour so later and it fired right up without hesitation. What is going on? Battery? Connections? Alternator? Regulator? I'm buffaloed. The symptoms don't match exactly with any of those options. Help again please. BTW thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like it may be a "connection" issue because of the heat from running. That turbo and starter are close together. Are all the heat shields in place? I would start nosing around the wiring from the battery area to the starter. Worst case it will end up being the starter and the only reason I say that is because it is kinda pricy and you don't want to get them from the "PullAParts" place. Removal/replacement of the starter is a good diy'er job.

Next time it does that try throwing cold water on the starter if it works replace starter.

I am by no means a mechanic, but I've always banged lightly on the starter to see if that will get it to start. Starters, form what I gather, just don't go out, but rather slowly die. First, maybe 1 out of 10 times won't start. Then 3 out of 10, etc...Of course check the battery and connections first. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I never looked at the moderator's reply.
But I have rebuilt the Bosch(sp?) starters, it is easy. One problem is the cast iron broken mounting ear, people tend to overtighten the mount bolts - funny thing, the same problems occurs on GM Diesel bus engines ! Motors hate heat , if the turbo is too close, you can make your own shield, I think.
