300D air cleaner location

The 300D/300TD engines generally have the air cleaner located near the engine center over the turbo.....the one I saw recently
(85) has a smaller diameter, and is mounted forward and closer to the radiator...the turbo is clearly visible. What year did they make this change?

Thanks,

Probably a California model.

I think they all changed in 1985, but it might just be the California models. I know they were put on all models with trap oxidizers.
