K & N Air Filter on a Stock 300SD
I was wondering if those switching to a K & N airfilter, in a stock configuration, experienced much noticeable performance and/or mileage increase. The $58.00 cost for one has hit my "cheap" button and just wonder if you think it is worth it. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated
Thanks

I've seen reports of another fellow with a '79 300SD doing 1/4 mi. runs with a stock filter and NO filter at all (best case scenario).
Used a G-Tech and made multiple runs. The non-air filter runs averaged about .1 sec. faster. So....putting on even a K&N would prolly lose that .1 second. And then, the K&N is not going to filter out dirt as well as the stock paper filters. Bottom line....$58 for no speed improvement and decreased air filtering. Doesn't sound like a good deal to me. Also, the engines are not air limited. The stock filtration is NOT the bottleneck here.

Elliott - keep in mind that, in my opinion, the people doing the air filter modification are doing it to make the underhood area "better looking" in addition to getting rid of that cumbersome air filter housing. I also suspect that the people doing it would not think anything of throwing a chain over a tree limb and pulling that engine for a rebuild.

I have them on my 300sd and 240d and cannot tell any difference in performance or mileage. If I had it to do over again, I would just save the money.
I also have one on my 454 suburban. Does not make any difference in mileage there either. Don't know about any increase in performance either but it is a little noisier for some reason on hard acceleration. |

Personally, I wouldn't put one on a 240D or 300D, the air filter is already huge compared to the engine displacement and doesn't limit the airflow very much. I have one on a Ramcharger and it does make a BIG difference in power..... not much with mileage but this is a 318 that is bored .040 over and makes somewhere between 325 and 350 hp, it sucks lots of air (and gas).

Save your money and your engine. The only way to get more flow from the same size filter is to filter less. Guess what dirt does to an engine. K&N filters were designed for the racing industry which does not expect to get 500K from an engine, 500Miles maybe.

The K&N filter that I have in my car has worked out well for me. The main reason that I got mine is because the Fram filter that came with the car was cracked so I decieded to stay away from them. I went to the only place in town that sold the German filters and they wanted like over $20 for them and they told me I should buy a K&N. If I would have known about some of the good deals on OEM filters that I could get online, I probally wouldn't have bought the K&N.

Thank you all for your time and opinions. I think I'll save the $58
