climate control torture
During the 3 years that I've owned my 82 300D, the heater has never really worked right. Last summer I replaced the climate control unit. The AC system was also repaired last summer, including a new compressor.
I drove from Manhattan to northern Vermont last Wednesday, and as usual there was minimal heat. The air coming out of the dash and floor vents was cool but not cold... I think the interior temperature of the car was around 55 degrees. The Mercedes dealer in Burlington (service dept. recommended by a friend) replaced the mono water valve diaphram, which was torn. That seemed to fix the problem... the temperature in the car was nice and warm as I drove away from the garage. But the next day, as I drove back to New York, the air coming out of the dash and floor vents would change from hot to cold. Each cycle of hot-cold-hot would take about 15 minutes, and repeated itself for the entire trip, about 6.5 hours. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. R |

Just a guess... Remove the glove compartment.. check the hose from the dash air intake .. I can not remember if yours is in the center of the dash or over by the speaker on the right.. it has a pipe that goes from it to the blower.. to suck air past the sencer to tell the system the temp inside the car.. part of it is foam.. If yous is in the center of the dash it will run over the top of the glove compartment.. if on the side it will run beside the compartment..If the foam is shot.. it will do what you are saying.. Replace it with some foam pipe cover like you use in a house.. Get some with about a 3/4 inch ID.. About 4 foot of it is about a buck and a half.. cut it as needed and install.. If the foam is good... I have no idea..

I just remembered that the size of the foam pipe insulation is for 1/2 inch copper pipe.. I think its the smallest they sell around here but works great to replace that old rubber section thats shot on most of the 123 and 116 cars..

This is a good bet...
If you have the ambient air sensor you'll see it on the top of the dash, right smack dab in the middle: a small square grate of sorts, same color as the dash.
I believe that this is a conduit for ambient cabin air which in turn "tells" the climate control whether ambient air temp is higher or lower than the desired temperature, then the climate control knows whether to make hot or cold air... Over time, the foam hose that Ken is mentioning can deteriorate and will need replacing. A cheap and easy job to do, really. |

Anecdotal...
I flew to Kansas City to buy my 300TD in April. It was raining like crazy all the way home, then rain turned to sleet the farther North I got. I was a little distressed to find I had no hot air for the defroster, not to mention the fact that I was a little chilly!
Somehow I managed. One of the first jobs on my new car was indeed the heater monovalve, which was torn like yours, and then the ambient air sensor foam tube. Now works great. |
