What about the chain driving the oil pump?
I was going through my parts catalog for the diesel engines and was noticing that the 60X series engines use a chain to drive the oil pump. With all the discussion with replacing the chains driving the camshaft, does the chain driving the oil pump get stretched like the camshaft chain and how often should they be changed? It would be catastrophic to the engine if the oil pump chain were to fail.

Yes it would be catastrophic if the chain drive to the oil pump failed. It would be catastrophic if the oil pump failed for any reason.
I did install a new oil pump and chain last time I had the engine out. Just because I did not trust either that engine and most certainly my luck. At the time I questioned several experienced MB techs. They said it was my choice, and not a bad choice to do that, but they were thought the MB oil pump was for the most part not a problem and would last the life of the diesel engine, as would the chain that drives it. Of course anything can happen. So you have to ask yourself. Do I feel lucky? |
