Changing transmission fluid when it has been in there for eons and the tranny isn't acting right can result in complete loss of function due to the new fluid dissolving the varnish, that varnish being the only thing keeping the worn-out valves and seal rings from leaking.

Otherwise, the only two ways that changing the fluid could cause the tranny to fail would be to get water in it or seriously over or under fill it. Both under and over fill can cause slippage from low pressure, and that will cause the clutches to burn up in short order.

Block heater help?

Do you know if using the block heater will help heat the transmission? Doesn't the transmission have cooler lines going to the radiator? And the raditator is heated up by the block heater, so that will heat the transmission fluid. Am I right here?

I use my block heater every night that it goes below 40 degrees. It not only helps the engine but will help the trans out too.

I have mine hooked up to a HD timer/relay to start heating the engine at 3:30 AM. When I leave for work at 6:30 AM the engine block and coolant is at least warmer than a dead cold start. With temps hovering around 0 deg F that last week here at night, the car has started and idled much better.

yes, it does help with the transmission on my car too. You could also get a stick-on heating pad and stick it onto the transmission instead of the oil pan. I had one on the oil pan on my old motor, since there was not a block heater and it was too hard to put one in. The pads come in several sizes, stick on well, and come with a tube of silicone sealant to seal the edges so it won't get oily and start to come off. I got one for about $40. I can't remember who makes them, only that they come from a place in Wisconsin. I just googled engine block heater to find them.

Thanks, I'll get another outdoor 15 amp timer (the other is on the christmas lights) and set my block heater to run 4 hours before I leave.
