state of the exhaust system and one other question
Hi,
Months and thousands of miles ago when I had my 300D in at the dealer, they said that it would need an exhaust system for some ridiculous cost. Lately I have felt that perhaps my car is getting a bit louder, and when I was doing my last oil change, I saw some metal ring hanging on the exhaust pipe. Today I went out to have a look at the exhaust system. This is what I found: rear muffler has a very small hole in the very rear bottom area. the size of a large pin head. pipe between the manifold and the middle muffler is quite old, and the surface is rusty, however it is for the most part structurally sound, however, the middle muffler has some sort of a shield that goes between the muffler and the input pipe. On the pipe side, there was a ring holding the two things together. The ring is quite rusty but there (thats what I saw on the pipe originally), but on either side of where the ring was, the pipe has a 3/4" long narrow hole in it. Overall they are pretty minor holes, but I'm sure especially the first one can cause the louder than normal sounds I have been hearing. I do not wish to replace the exhaust system, nor do I have the $$$, so, what is the best stuff to use and the best way to patch these two small holes, and prevent them from becoming big holes? on another note, how do you tell that a trnasmission mount is bad? On my other car, I have heard a rattling noise. After being sure that it wasnt a cv joint (I heard the noise at the right times for it to be the cv joint), I heard from someone that it may be the rear trans mounts. I went under the car, and looked and squeezed them, and they were soft at 29°F, not cracked, flaking or dried out. But what are the usual metrics to decide if a mount is done for? I Thanks very much for your help on these two items. JMH

I would think that the rest of the system is not far behind with all the small holes you have. If you are looking to save money and/or the car is not really worth the investment of oem parts find a local custom pipe shop and have a system bent up for you. I use a local shop that does incredible work, usually half of what anyone else charges, made with aluminized pipe and welded together. Look for shops that work on hotrods and musclecars. They are used to making things from scratch. Good luck, RT
