Unhappy This is depressing.

This is a great forum, but it is quite depressing. All anyone seems to talk about is problems w/ their cars and not why they love their diesels. Well, for the most part. I think that's why I like the open forum more. Less complaints, more praising of the Mercedes nameplate, as well as other things. Oh well, I'm sure I'll need the technical end one day...

I know the feeling.

Just for the record, I've replaced the voltage regulator, battery, valve-cover-to-air-cleaner hose, monovalve, and booster vacuum hose. Otherwise, except for the main and aux cooling fans and the cruise control, my car's performed completely flawlessly.

I love my lil' Benz!

Mine seems to always have something go bad right after another, regardless I still love the car. It's expensive, but I still love it. I don't know why. I would have gotten a better investment with a newer car... but I still won't trade it for anything, unless it's a newer MB or BMW!

Depressing!?!? Hell no! I can't possibly think of a more uplifting place than a forum where you can ask questions, get advice, etc. so that you can better maintain older "classic" Mercedes Benz. You save money by better diagnoses of problems and also for the inclined, performing the repair yourself. Think of how many wonderful Benz's that have been saved from the scrapyard so that they may grace the highways (and disgrace every other car). If you are serious about saving/driving an older diesel, this is THE place to be and there ain't nothing better than that!! RT

For the first time everything on my car is working perfect, so I am not depressed about it. It sort makes me feel good to read about everyones problems too, and try to help with what I know.

I bought my third Diesel Benz in the last few months because I like to drive them. Drove the last one for 20 years, and except for the last ten years or so have had a running MB diesel since 1965. As a result I find this forum to be way more interesting than one with a "praise the Benz" attitude.

For instance, recently found the engine not reaching operating temp, even after putting some cardboard between rad and A/C condenser. Got the appropriate thermostat at "AutoZone" as mentioned on this FORUM. During the replacement one of the housing bolts twisted off. Spent a bunch of extra time removing all of the rest of the pieces so that the t-stat body could be taken out to work and fixed. Previous threads on this FORUM had already prepared me for the possibility that a bolt (cap screw) might twist off, and several have presented thoughts on how to recover from the "event". What better way is there to keep a great car running well, a lot longer, for less money spent on maintenance.

I'll definitely be returning here for some time to come.

Volk:

The Diesel forum is definately a 'Fix-it' type place. It's not meant for idle chat but rather for people who are having some type of problem....be it minor or major.

....so, saying that everyone here is having problems is kinda natural. If people with diesel's WERE'NT haven't problems, they wouldn't be posting here

Also, most MB diesels are of the '87 and older variety....meaning they are reaching that age when things just start to flat wear out....not break, but just get old.

Not too many show stopper problems as far as I can tell....seems like mostly the problems are annoyance type issues related to something just being old and needing cleaning or replacing.

Uh, .... Excuse Me, ....... That's what this forum is here for. To post problems with your car to see if others can offer help or advice.

If you want to post pleasant poetry or prose about your car, then go to the Featured Cars forum.

Have a great day,

Depressing would be having to sell my awesome 116 because I couldn't afford to keep paying my mechanic's kids tuition. It would have cost thousands of dollars to have someone else do what I have learned to do myself. This forum is the only resource I know of that could have provided me with so much value. This deal is a great anti-depressant.

I think this forum is fantastic. There aren't many W210 diesels out there, so I don't get to help much, but I love reading about how others are maintaining the old cars. I'm gathering knowledge for them time when I finally buy a W116 or W123. In that vein, please remember to come back and post the outcome once you've solved the problem.

Thumbs up

This forum is the reason I bought my 83 300D. I have always wanted one, but knew nothing about maintaining them. In the month that I have owned the 300D, it has gone from a true "slug" of the line with terrible shifting, performance and milage to a 24+MPG "peppy" little non-oil leaking diesel.

This forum is very similiar to the one I go to for John Deere tractors and Powerstroke diesels. Great information for the do-it-yourselfer and "tinkerer".

This site is like a cup of coffee. I'm hooked, I need it in the morning, and I get energized by it.
