1983 300SD Deisel Injector Pump
I think I am in trouble. I changed both my fuel filters on my 1983 300SD with 250,000 miles on it and I cannot get the car started. I have done this many times and had no problems. I bled the system as instructed and then after no success I disconnected the tubing at the injector pump and having someone try to start the car noticed that only one jet was pumping fuel (the one closest to the firewall) Do I still have air or dirt in the fuel line or is my injector pump bad? How do i check and correct the problem before spending the huge amount of money to replace the pump? I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you and God bless - dennis

You've still got air in there. Sometimes they can be a bear. First you have to be sure your hand pump isn't spewing fuel all over when you pump it. If it is, replace it. With a good hand pump, start pumping until you hear a little squealing noise coming from the injection pump with each stroke. Screw the hand pump down and try to restart the car. After a few starts and dies, go back and pump somemore. Repeat until it starts. You should be able to look down at the little plastic filter and see the fuel being sucked in with each upward stroke. That is one reason I prefer the clear filters over the opaque.
Good luck, Peter

Autozen is right. I think you need fuel squirting out more than one line - especially if it is cold out and/or the engine is starting to get a little tired. Keep trying and you will get it.
Did you fill up the new screw on filter with fuel/additives? You pretty much HAVE to do this to expedite the starting after this procedure.

Will it quicken the priming process to crack the injector lines and tighten them only when fuel spills out?

sixto - when I am doing something where I have removed the injector lines I do not tighten them down at the injectors until I have fuel coming out - whether it be with the hand pump or cranking the engine over.

That's what I do with the SDL which doesn't have or apparently need a hand pump. I was wondering if the I could crank the SD with the lines open (ajar?) and bypass the hand pumping step. I've never had the SD fuel system open so I don't know.
