Brian,

I found out that my 300SD engine wouldn't start either with 2 GP open. It wouldn't even sputter in about 30*F weather. It started with no difference when 1 GP was bad but with 2 GP bad, nothing. I would think it would at least try to start on the 3 cylinders that had good GP.

When I replaced the 2 bad GP, the engine started on the first or second turn even though it was relatively cold. Now I replace a bad GP as soon as the blinking GP indicator notifies me that 1 GP has gone bad.

PEH,

I concur completely. The loss of the second glow plug is the kiss of death. I really cannot figure out how I lost two glow plugs at the same time however. The dash light was working fine and the vehicle was starting just fine and then, one 12 degree morning at a hotel no less, nothing. No light, no start.

I replaced the #1 glow plug the next day from one I had on the shelf and it runs fine again. I ordered and received another plug for #4 but have not installed it yet because of no need. However, since I am on borrowed time, I probably will not dawdle any more.

Do you use anit-seize when you install them? I seem to recall one poor fellow who broke one off at the top of the threads.
