What kind of Oil and Diesel Treatment should I use?

Hi,

Ok..so the car has been sitting around for awhile now, and winter is here, so it prolly won't be driven for awhile eiter. What kind of diesel additive should I use to A- Clean the fuel in there, and B- Clean the system...I assume it is a bottle of "x", but what is the name?

I also imagine it will need an oil change...what is the recommended oil?

Filters, radiator, hoses...are on the way, I think...

Thanks,
-Kurt

Any major brand diesel treatment will work fine. Put in 6-8 oz if you aren't going to drive it much in cold weather so the fuel won't gel on you.

As for oil, anything is fine so long as it is rated CD or better. Don't use any oil that doesn't have a Cx (for compression ignition) rating -- CI-4 or CH-4 are the best (and the latest rating), but any with at least a CD rating will work. Don't use 10-30 oils, certainly avoid the 0-30 oil, but any brand will work. I personally use Mobil 1, simply because I think it is better oil and I don't have to change it as often, but suit yourself!

I have used Delo 400 in the past, and am currently using 5W-40 Rotella T Synthetic. Not to start another oil debate, use what oil you think will be best suited for you and your climate.

As for additives, I use Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement. If you really want to clean you injectors out, try a can of Lubro Moly Diesel Purge, this is the best stuff for cleaning clogged injectors.

I second using Power Service. You can find it at any Walmart. As for oil, use any brand of conventional oil that is 15W-40. For synthetic, you can use 5W-40, 15W-40, or 15W-50. I noticed that ALL synthetic oils, regardless of weight, have a "C" rating. Though I would not use anything less than xxW-40.

Maybe a good idea to add some anti-algee stuff to the fuel just for good measure and top off the fuel tank. I know on boats it is not just a problem in the tropics.

As far as adding things to the fuel like Red Line or Molly, I only add something like that if theres a problem, nailing or
I feel shes a little, whatever, then dump in a can of injector cleaner outer, cant hurt and is cheap. I read someplace that adding ATF to your fuel causes soot build up, who knows, some folks claim ATF is a cure-all for all sorts of things or maybe just spray some Windex on it. Have a good weekend all

Here's a thread from the past with information on diesel fuel additives directly from the source:
