Water in car

Recently my daughter reported that the front passenger footwell carpet is wet. The last couple of winters the footwell has been dry. Before this I had done a bandaid reseal of the windshield seal. I think this had stopped the leak. The haywire repair of the windshield still looks serviceable, so I was wondering if there is another common leak point that someone else may suggest to me.

Thanks again,
Doug

Hi Doug,

You may want to check the FIRE WALL area underneath the battery. I have heard that 123's have a problem with rusting through due to the effects of corrosion from battery acid.

good luck

I had some water leak into my car and leak onto the front passenger footwell this morning, but there has been some heavy rain for the past few days. I had a bad battery leak in the past, but I don't think a hole has rusted through. I noticed that many of the drain holes have got plugged in the past few months, so I am thinking that I have a clog and water somehow leaked in.

Do a search on the topic, there is lots of good info. Check the drains under the hood from the cowl and under the hoodsprings. The hoodsprings area drains to a secondary drain right next to the battery and near the master cylinder respectively that they empty into the fender wells behind the plastic fender liners. I had a post on how I found my drains titled "drains I found today" Maybe you can find it. Also I have heard the AC drain will disintegrate and then dump into the footwell. Do a search and check this out as well. Good luck, RT

Check the rocker panel behind the front wheel. If there is a hole there, water will happily enter this way and infect the rest of the car, starting with the nearest footwell area.

Humm,

I think it's been covered pretty well. I ussually spend $1 at the carwash and clean fenderwells, clear debris from under the hinges. Works well.
If your seal is orginal on a 1980 sd- I'd think it's time for replacement. Did they seal the glass to the rubber or the rubber to the body? Both? Mine was a beast and until I watched water pour into the car in a thunderstorm-everyone seemed to have a different answer. Of course, the glassshop insisted the car had rotted out or had bad seals somewhere else.

mine was the front glass seal(W123). Assume your 300sd is similar. In DFW a seal and installation is $100.

I had some more water leak in last night. I hope I can get it stopped before the next rain storm starts later today or tomorrow.
