That's because the dictionary is frequently wrong on technical matters, and other matters too.

I looked up concierge once in a dictionary and it said a concierge was the janitor. So next time you are at a hotel and need the floor cleaned, call the concierge. I'm sure that he/she will be right there holding a mop and broom.

Do a search on valve adjust or adjusting valves and you should find a complete dissertation on how to adjust the valves. Most important thing is to get the lock nut tight so it doesn get loose and allow the valve to go into the cylinder and destroy the engine.
