Talking Me Too.

Ah yes, 20-20 hindsight!

I made the mistake of listening to certain people and delayed also. But no more.

Wish I'd done ours a year and a half ago.

Newbie

I just bought a 1999 E300D three days ago. 57,xxx miles. Black, grey MB-Tex, has cruise, sunroof, Bose system as options far as I know. I own a 1998 GMC Suburban with a 6.5 turbo engine so I have learned a bit about diesels . The car starts and runs well but I have a few questions:

1) can I use the VIN, or must i use another code number, to find definitive info on my car's characteristics? I particularly want to know if I have ALL MB-Tex, or a mix of the tex and leather.

2) I am going to replace both fuel filters. I see the filter to the left of the engine up front, but where is the 'pre-filter' located? What are intervals for each - 30k miles?

3) there is a faint smell of fuel inside the car when driving. I will be checking for leaks but if anyone has pointers I'd appreciate it.

4) which shop manual is best? is a manual available on a CD?

I am looking forward to enjoying this Mercedes for a long time and look forward to contributing to the form! Thanks !

The sunroof and Bose system came as a package, and were ridiculously priced if bought separately, so you probably have the Bose.

All MB-Tex was not available in 1999, so yours is a mix. The perforated center sections are leather, and the rest is Tex. A perfect combination, IMHO.

It's hiding inside the bracket for the main fuel filter. Not sure about the intervals.

That's probably the six plastic fuel lines around the injection pump. Replace them all, along with the plastic clips on the metal injection lines. I've posted about them numerous times, including the part numbers to buy.

Sorry, but there is none. Mercedes publishes that info on the web at Star Tek Info. It is subscription based and not cheap.

If you have any other questions, please post them in a new thread, so we can keep this one as a roll call.

New E300D owner

Hello all,

Just purchased a decent Smoke Silver 1997 E300D for about $8k. It has just under 168k miles on it and is a one-owner car. It is apparent that it was impeccably maintained and the engine runs as smoothly as an electric motor, but it has a few small rust spots on the front doors around the side mouldings. So far, I'm very pleased with the car. Everything seems to work OK, except the climate control has the occasional "hot on the left, cold on the right" issue that I have been reading about.

This forum is a wealth of information. I look forward to being able to properly repair and maintain our Benz with all of the assistance available here. My daily driver is a rare 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood front drive 4.3 V6 diesel. It has been largely restored and manages 30 mpg in combined local driving. Long live diesels!!! I too, love the smell of diesel exhaust and am a huge fan of this readily available, alternatively fueled engine.

Thanks to all for a very enlightening and entertaining forum.

I am new to this site, but want to thank all for the great information. I have had the usual problems everyone has described, glow plugs, light bulbs, fuel leaks, MAS(on order), cheap radio(replaced) and will check on the spring pearch. Ball joints next? Midnight blue leather, bought new.

I have a 1996 E300d that has 103k on the clock and purchased April 05 for 14k. It's now running great and is my daily driver during the acceptable weather here. My winter vehicle is a pickup truck.

My 98 E-300TD

I posted this in events and gatherings, but since we're discussing 98/99 E-300's, I thought I'd share my tales of woe...

I'm learning it just doesn't pay to own a nice car. Heidi was looking good once again after being rear-ended and repaired. Total repair bill was about $3,200.00. Then last Tuesday, I was driving to work before dawn and suddenly started getting PELTED with gravel. Since there was an 18 wheeler just ahead of me, I romped down on the (did we ever figure out what to call a gas pedal in a diesel?) accelerator and got ahead of it. Still, I was catching rocks badly. It hurt. While browsing the Conroe Courier, I noticed other drivers had complained to the contractor. Turns out, one sub put down the rocks and another was supposed to seal them to the road. Apparently, they got their signals mixed and the rocks were left loose. The main contractor told me they each carry insurance for this type thing and someone will ultimately be responsible, once they finish their finger pointing.
Preliminary estimate for repairing the paint, headlights, and windshield damage: $4,298.13

snif, why am I the only person that loves Heidi, and everyone else tries to harm her?

I bought her brand new and picked her up in Germany. This is a one owner car that's been meticulously maintained...but she's a daily driver, and 170,000 miles is rough on a thoroughbred.

I just aquired a 1997 E300D with 201K: Polar white exterior, grey leather, orthopedic heated seats, Bose speakers, CD changer, Xenon lowbeams, glass sunroof, phone. One owner, clear Carfax. Not as fast as my 603 car, want to learn more about the chipping potential. Plan to alter EGR to fresh air and change all fluids to synthetic. Main reason for moving from 124 to 210 body was the additional airbags.
