Valve adjust question

How far in there is the nut on the crankshaft? I can stick my fingers in there a little ways and have yet to be able to find anything but the inside of the pulleys. I don't really want to try the PS pulley method to turn the engine over.... I think that's how it's been done on this car before. Oh, the nut is 27mm right? Thanks for the help.

Yep 27 mm sounds right- same socket as the injectors=0)

I use a short 1" extension on my 1/2 drive.

27mm is correct and just use a deep socket or a small extension. I don't even reach in there but simple force the deep socket up past the fan guard, turn it and manipulate it until it catches on the bolt.

I use the same wratchet that I use for tightening the valve cover so that I don't inadvertantly leave in on the lower bolt while starting the engine. That would truly be a bummer.

Don, where did you find a 27mm? I can't even find one from snap-on.... the biggest I can find on their site is 26mm. I'm sure I have a standard size that will "fit" but I would rather have the real deal.

There is nothing wrong by using the power steering pump nut to turn over the engine. DON'T turn the engine counter clock wise. This will slack the timing chain. If you miss the spot, turn it all the way around again. If the belt slips when turning the pump shaft, put hand pressure on the top of the belt and it will grip. This method to turn the engine doesn't harm the pump. Chris

Wasuchi,

When you use the ratchet and socket wrench on the crankshaft bolt you will soon learn how many ratchet clicks it takes to get to the next valve to be adjusted which will make the valve adjust job much easier.

You do know that the easiest way to adjust the valves is to do them in firing order?

A 1 1/16 inch socket will also work.
