LOL, how true about people in the Northeast. Occasionally if you are driving with me you will see a 100mph triple lane change though

Ditto but mixed.
There seem to be two kinds of car people. There are those that love cars and love to talk about them with other people who love cars, and then there are people who love cars because they can serve to seperate them or define them as elitist. The latter type sucks, but its worth it to wave or flash everyone for the chance of running into one of the former.
I used to drive a '74 MGB-GT, an awesome car, daily driver for five years in Chicago. The british car scene is generally friendly but there are still some curmudgeons out there. I've still had lengthy conversations with people driving E-types and Astons, though, because they love the *cars*. I've had mixed results with the MB (84 300D Turbo, very nice). I did find my neighbor had one I never noticed, so I dropped by and now I'm more involved with the 'hood. 'Cuz he's into the *car*. Its about the car, ma-a-a-n, the car. HA! Seriously, though, I do like blowing by newer Benzes on the freeway at about 95. Not the smartest thing in the world but sometimes you got to kick a little dust. I also robbed a newer Benz out of a parking spot the other day, but sometimes style must go before the cha-ching... Well, who's a little elitist now? Oh well. |

i pulled off the highway to get fuel today and at a random sunoco station. what's the car getting fuel ahead of me but my car's twin! - same year/color- eveything
i spent a few minutes chatting with the owner and trading a couple of chuckles over the coincidence.

I would wave, but the other drivers can't see me through the tinted windows.
I heartily agree with rwthomas's findings about the northeast. I had lived my entire life in Florida until last year when I spent 6 months working in Connecticut. I was absolutely shocked at the rudeness of those people. And the further north you go the worse it gets. New Yorkers, however, are quite firendly as long as you don't get in their way when they're in a hurry. Whenever I get fuel at a truck stop on the interstate, the truck driver at the next pump invariably asks about the car. They all want to know about the "gas" mileage. Oh, and I do give a "beep beep" once in a while when I see a nice Diesel on the road. There are still plenty of them down here.

There are a lot of factors at work here. In NCal we have enough old 300Ds around here that mine just seems to blend in. Most people don't even notice them when they drive by. It takes something more unique like a finback to get people's attention. When my wife drives I know she definitely doesn't notice another mercedes, in fact she almost never pays attention to the other kinds of cars on the road at all. She's not snobby, she's just not interested. On the other hand a couple of times she's gotten in conversations with people at fuel stops, that does happen here. It's definitely a bit of a gearhead thing. I notice all the cars and frequently wave to anyone who has an interesting car and looks like a fellow gearhead. I think it's the mutual appreciation of the machinery, not the type of car, that is at the heart of it.

As for waiving I don't really see that many on the road, but if I'm close up I always check them out and can't help but smile as I pass by. Kinda like when I see a real riced out honda, I can't help but break out into laughter.... ~jm

I guess out of all of my cars, the two that strike up conversation when I'm driving them are the 280SE and the TR6. Of course, with the TR6 it's usually "how much oil does it leak?" and "do the electrics work?"

Joshhol...Eastern Shore great place for car-spotting...
and nice Mercedes up to 40 years old are commonplace. Remember being on the road between Easton and Oxford while in college, driving an MG-TF. Around a curve coming toward me was...an open "blower Bentley." The driver took me in and favored me with a wave worthy of the Queen Mother as I hasten'd to tug my forelock in salute.
Another great car seen from time to time around Easton is a "Leland Lincoln" from the early '20s, with an open phaeton body by Murphy of Pasadena. Really impressive. Commonly see MBs from seventies on in fine shape, just "summer cars" for the estate set. |

I can say that in Hawaii there are only the high nosers. Unfortunately this is bad for those of us who drive the cars for something other than having a star on our hood as a status symbol, as it seems to attract negative reactions from other drivers. I find the exchange of info from the people on this board who genuinely love the marque for the quality, reliability, and safety that really makes a Mercedes worth owning to be refreshing and unique. For my part I will continue to smile and wave at the Old Timers that share the road.

Maybe I should start making the first move but honestly being very young I feel very intimidated in waving to or starting a conversation with an older person in the older MB's (who are the majority of these cars' owner)
Hopefully I will change. However when I see an exceptionally nice and well cared for old MB or BMW, I usually make the move. I saw a beautiful BMW M6 the other day at the car wash so I just told the owner what a beautiful car it was. Then we just talked about it

BTW, was the M6 one of those 635CSI's from the mid-80's? I'd love to find one of those. There was one for sale not far from me about 6 months ago, but didn't have the cash.
