New Manual Tranny

I should go and pick up my 190D with a "new" 5 speed tranny (actually not new but from a 1985 with 120kmi.

Surprisingly, the problem with the old transmission was that the input bearing was shot. The clutch (with 255kmi was showing wear but not yet worn to the point of replacement). Apparently, the bad input bearing generated enough heat to destroy the pilot bearing. Interestingly, I change the transmission fluid about every 50kmi on the manual tranny and I use only redline fluids. I am surprised that the bearing failed at 355kmi.

Anyway, the car is done. The cost estimate from the dealer was about 3700-3900. But I did it a different way. I got the transmission from AAA small car world in Texas (now under a different name) for 473.00 delivered to michigan. I purchased a ton of new parts including new clutch parts, slave cylinder, master cylinder, seals, bearings, mounts, flex discs, etc totalling 470.00. The labor charge for the work, including the replacement of a couple of other under car parts was a little less than 600.00. In the end, I paid about 1600 for a completely rebuilt system.

Hopefully it will give me another 250 to 300 kmi of carefree driving.
