I've put (only!) 20 K miles on my 92 300D 2.5 for the first 22 months of ownership : the cost of maintenance is 13 cents (US) per mile (almost all DIY ; majors items : header pipe, brake rotors, snow tires, flex disc, injectors, oil cooler, engine mounts, glow plugs). Fuel is another 7 cents per mile. Depreciation is ... nothing : the car is always so fine to drive !

Sorry to take so long to weigh in on this one, but I wanted to compare my 300D Turbo and the Crown Vic.
300D: Purchased last March for 3 grand. Driven 30,000 miles to date. Estimated depreciation, 500 bucks, if that. Expenses including Diesel, oil changes, license and insurance and all repairs: $3190 Cost per mile= 11 cents. Crown Vic: Purchased 1997 for 23,000 including taxes and financing. Driven 75,000 miles to date. Estimated depreciation, $15,200. Expenses including Gasoline (ugh), oil changes, license and insurance and all repairs: $5835 Cost per mile, 28 cents. The biggest part of the difference is obviously the depreciation- I bought the 300D to make a 125 mile commute each day, and it made no sense to get a newer vehicle and drive it into the ground. The longer I drive these cars, the better I like them, especially with operating costs being as low as they are.

gas can be ok
Folks,
My current record I am hoping to improve on is an unlikely candidate. I bought a '90 Pontiac Bonneville (it is the same car as a Buick or Olds, but they have worse resale) , 2 years old - 30,000 miles, for $9000. Drove it until the trans failed at 170,000. Got $1000 net benefit as a tax deduction to the Kidney foundation. Insurance, repairs, tires, and oil totaled another $5000 over 6 years. The car always got 25 mpg or better, so I'll assume $1.25 gas or .05 per mile. The net result was about .14-.15 cents per mile including everything. A previous poster got it, you have to watch the depreciation part, that can kill you if you drive a lot. I typically buy really nice used cars, a few years old, and pick models that have rotten resale so they are cheap relative to the service left in them. I replaced the Bonneville with a Lincoln Mark VIII. The Lincoln was a $45,000 car new, I bought it 6 years old with 60K miles for $9000. I hope to hit 150K miles with it and no major repairs. My wife liked it so much I had to find another car. Now I have an 87 300-SDL, $3500 with 215K on it. Last year I put 20K on it... but with a few startup repairs. We'll see how it goes! Chuck |
