Oil Leak on 1983 300SD
First I want to thank Autozen, Engatwork and Sixto for helping me solve my fuel delivery problem. Replacing the leaking hand pump did the job.
My new problem is an oil leak that I cannot find. It seems to be coming from somewhere under the turbo side of the engine. I have also noticed that oil is getting on part of the air filter. The car runs great but the small leak is annoying and makes a mess whenever I park the car. I have to add about one quart every two weeks to keep the oil at its proper level. The 1983 300SD has 260,000 miles on it. - Dennis |

Way to go with the fuel delivery issue.
Now - on to the fun stuff - the oil leak issue. I would start by removing the air filter housing and insuring that the "cyclone separator" oil return line is attached to it's proper location under the air filter housing. Once you pull the bottom part of the filter housing off you will see the oil return line. I have seen the housing get put back into place and the pipe not get lined up properly which causes leaks. Once you have the filter housing out of the way you should be able to nose around under there and determine where the oil is coming from. It is either from the separator return line or the oil return line from the turbo charger. There are a few "o" rings/seals on these lines and they do go to leaking after x number of years. Resealing the oil return line from the turbo is a pia but is a diyer type of job. Do a search on here on "turbo oil return line" and you should be able to find a couple descriptions on the steps involved. You may have to take some degreaser and clean everything up to be able to tell where the oil is coming from. Do not spray anything on a HOT turbocharger. It is not real unusual to see oil on the air filter - probably coming from "blowby". Try changing the air filter and see if it does it again.
