Noisey fan belt when cold
I had the fan, fan belt, clutch and tensioner replaced about 30K ago. Now it is making more noise then usual when it is cold ie <35F. The belt looks good and there seems to be enough tension on it. What are your thoughts...

Cheapest thing to try is to rub some bar soap on the belts. If the squeeling is coming from there, that will stop it. Not much room to work on these, but it takes only a little soap to be effective. Just any old bar of soap from your bath.

Thanks Old Dies... sounds unconventional but I will give it a shot.

Wow! A great "old timey" solution...

When you had the belt off, did you spin each pulley one at a time to ensure that all the bearings are smooth? If you did, the belt is new and it is tensioned correctly, then don't worry about it.
If the noise bothers you, turn up the radio volume. Good luck, |

Larry,
A trusted local dealer did the work on the fan. I imagine they cheked the bearings but am not sure. Is there a way for me to check them now?

Since it was done by a shop, they may have spun everything or maybe not. The only way I know to check all the accessories is to remove the belt and give everything a spin.
Someone who is accustomed to listening, should be able to listen and tell if it is the belt or a bearing. Good luck, |

New belts will sometimes make noise, but so will old belts...
hmmmm.... Also, you don't want or need the belts to be toooo tight, especially the water pump. You can buy spray belt dressing which quiets things for a while.

A squeek like that can also be caused by significant wear on one of the pulleys. Try rubbing your finger on each pulley and see if you can feel a deep depression on one pulley or more. It may only be on one side of the pulley or another caused by misalignment. Also try simply replacing the belt with one of a different brand. It can make a difference.
