Free horsepower make 240d REAL fast!!!

This is probably a no-brainer but, while recently was fooling with my accelerator linkage & found that when my pedal was pressed all the way to the floor, the linkage on the motor wasn't fully open.

So with a little bit of adjustment I now have fully open ip when my pedal is to the floor.

The result - well put it this way............. My whiplash injuries are slowly healing :D

Lol, Seriously I think, maybe, possibly I might have noticed a bit of an increase in acceleration.

The title of your post was most amusing. Any time you use the words fast and 240D in the same sentence, there must be humor involved.

The way you can measure the difference in acceleration, is to get a three minute egg timer and see how many times it has to be turned over before the car reaches sixty miles per hour.

Seriously though, it's amazing how often such a basic step is overlooked. In the sixties and seventies, I saw more than once a drag car that had not been checked for WOT. These guys spent a fortune on building engines and race cars only to handicap themselves by not peering down the carburetor to ensure a fully opened throttle while someone was holding it to the floor.

Good catch,

HeHe!! Yep, I had this condition on my Jetta when I bought it. It was an unbelieveable dog until I adjusted the cable for WOT. Now its just a dog......! RT

The accelerator pivot mount on my 240D slowly deteriorated and I finally noticed that I couldn't keep my speed above 40mph on even the small hills. It prompted me to look into and find the problem. In order to get all HP out of the engine the IP and air intake must be at maximum.

Since I am the proud owner of one of these "dogs" and would like to come off the line a little faster than a slow crawl, which part of the linkage needs to be adjusted? I have never messed with the linkage on any of my cars for fear of really messing something up. A llittle more get up and go, or should I say any get up and go, would be nice.

My 84 doesn't seem that slow, I mean I've only let it go WOT once or twice. It laid rubber in first, almost red, chirped into second, almost red, then I let off in third. I would imagine it was at least single digit 0-60. I would say there was a second, second and a half of delay until the turbo was spooled then all that remained where I was, was diesel fumes. :)

Good post!

On my 1980 240D, this was one of the first things I did to it, was to replace the rubber/metal pivot thingey on the linkage. I think in the picture it is #5.

I held my breath and went into the dealer to buy it. They had one in stock here in San Jose.

I tightened my buttocks and went to the cashier.

"$12 please,..."

Say WHAT???

"No, no lady, I am paying for the linkage thingey, not a license plate bulb..."

" That's correct sir, are you trying to make a scene? Do I have to call security?"

"...uhhh, no no! I'll take it!"

See? Ya never nose!

Still, shoulda bin at least 65-70 bucks for this complex part... weird huh?:D

Some of these MB parts can really surprise you in both ways!

I bought a Sunroof Bracket. Sure it's only a small piece of metal but it is a MB part. It was $15 from the dealer.

However most of the interior and especially coupe-specific parts are horribly expensive!!!!

Well I just try to avoid the stealership as much as possible, most cases if I go there it is because I'm in dire need of a important part. Also most of the time I don't end up getting it and end up ordering it online, or finding it used online. But instead of being mad at the dealership I just have to think to myself, one day I should write them a letter and thank them for making my 300Ds so inexpensive. After all if there weren't Mercedes stealerships with their prices so horribly high, more people would want them, which would in turn increase their value and I would of never got my cars for so cheap. ;)

Everything bad always incorporates something good (and vice versa). :)

I did same adjustment on my 74 240 and then removed oil bath air filter and adapted a filter and filter housing from a 91 Ply van... was very easy conversion and car though not a Corvette eater runs stronger.......
