I started using and making it last year. I love it, car runs better & smells MUCH better! I haven't had a chance to make any in the last couple of months but hope to get back into it soon.

Check out www.veggievan.org . This is a good site about it & the guy who runs it wrote a very good book on the subject. The forum off of that site is terrific!

Howdy,

As I understand there are alot of benefits to running biodiesel (higher cetane, smoother running, cleans the fuel system), but there are also alot of disadvantages. Biodiesel cloud point is much higher than petro diesel. Also, the disadvantage they have been discussing ad-naseum over on the TDI forum is the corrosion problem. Bio diesel is hygroscopic and when mixed with water can corrode your injection system.

Any of you running bio have any experience with the negatives?

Sholin

Been burning bio fuel for years. Started with a Rabbit conv. that i put a diesel in. Have burned canola oil , used french fry oil, used tranny oil, scented lamp oil, used motor oil, paint thinner (mineral spirits), power service and every possible mixture you can name. Did this starting with the Rabbit and on to two of my 240D,s and now in my 95 E300. YES it has all been filtered.
There has never been any bad effects. The engine is absolutely quieter. The fuel mileage does not change very much. Monitoring the filters is all thats required.
Just recently ran a tank full in 20 degree weather and had no problem. Gell additive always added at each fill up.
The last 240 I had is still running on original injectors and pump with 345,000.

Hi Ricali,

What are your costs per gallon when making biodiesel? I'm interested in the $$ aspects of the lye & methanol. And am assuming that you get the fryer-oil free of charge.

Also, could you run biodiesel in a oil fired house furnace?

I'm interested in perhaps doing some brewing this summer.

Thanks

Aivars

Hi AJB

I have a friend who runs a small restaraunt. He filters his oil and disposes of it weekly. I get real clean french fry oil delivered to my house every two weeks in original clean containers. He only cooks french fries and therefore there is no salt or any other goodies mixed in. Previously he was giving it to some one who burned it direct in his home heating oil.
Do not get to hung up on the lye mixture as it is very difficult to get the right formular. I burn most of mine direct. I started by buying 5 gallons of new canola and just kept adding it to the diesel. I really do not know what the big deal is with diesel as the first diesels made ran on peanut oil. I hae a trucker friend who has been adding used motor oil to his fuel for years and never had any problems.
Give it a try and good luck

Smile My 2 cents...

I have been making biodiesel and running it for years with great success. I have saved a lot of money am also helping fight air pollution. I don't run straight oil or any "cocktails", I just make high quality biodiesel from waste cooking oil and the Benz loves it.
