Breather tube '85 300D

I've notice lately that there is a little oil on both ends of my breather tube. Some oil on the valve cover portion and some on the air filter. I can only guess as to how much oil, but I would assume very little. Is this a cause for concern? Thanks, 85 300D "California"

The rubber gets hard after years... It must come apart to do the valves and air cleaner.. So its been apart lots of times.. What you see is normal.. Perhaps less than most the way you discribe it.. You can put hose clamps on the joints to tighten them but unless its really a leak I would just wipe them from time to time.. When it really leaks use the hose clamps.. but just tighten them a little.. In time you may have to replace the rubber.. the California has that strange set up any way with the vent from the valve cover then to the turbo intake and air cleaner and all down slope so oil will go there..

still holding til it's time for a new one. maybe the 'updated' breather hose which is all in one piece will fit your car. check with phil at fastlane

I installed an updated breather hose and still have some oil leak. My car will not idle with the breather hose not attached. What's up with that???

Do you mean your 280C or 300D?

The '83 300D. I currently have the IP out of the car. When the tech changed the timing chain 4 years (and 40,000 miles ago) he said the IP was retarded nine degrees and the IP would have to come off to set it. I had no idea what he meant. But now I know why he did not want to do it. Removing the oil canister was a tough reach. But I have the IP out, set the timing and I am waiting on the gasket from Fastlane to put it back together. Should be easier to put back together now that everything is wiped down and dry (no diesel fuel and oil raining down). Hope to see better performance: less smoke, smoother idle and better cold engine idle.
