240D Smoking

I have a 1982 240D Manual Trans. It seems to smoke alot (Black Smoke) when I leave a stop light with normal to heavy aceleration. Is this a sign of bad injectors? Car runs great and still gets good milage (25mpg). I was thinking about pulling an injector for inspection, but not sure if I would need a new crush washer when I reinstall it. What do you guys think?

Thanks for info,

Bill

Yes you will need to replace the washers that go under the injectors. Looking at them wil not do much though but a local shop should be able to check them for you.
Let me know what you find as I have been trying to figure out why my 240 blows clouds here at 3500 feet and barely puffs at sea level.

I have reused the "heat shields" under the injectors before, but it really is best to replace them. After you check the injectors, you might then check the injection timing.

When I first got my 300D, it would smoke alot and after checking everything, the problem turned out to be the previous owner had a mechanic that advanced the injection pump timing about 4 or 5 degrees. After readjusting it back to spec, the car barely smokes at all.

Also check the air filter.

Thanks for the info. I have been reading DA Book and it says that the injectors should be replace every 100K miles. So with 220K on the car maybe they are bad???? I will check IP timing first though that is much cheaper. Also if you are to replace the injector heat shields (washers) how do you know what size to use without first taking one off the car. Fastlane says there are two different sizes.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill:

Check the timing chain stretch before you get excited about anything else -- if it is worn, you will have late valve timing and late injection timing, and as a result get smoke and low power.

25 mpg is very low for a 240 with a four speed -- 32 is more typical! That is, if your odometer is working properly, not likely by this time.

If the chain is worn, replace it before messing about with the injection timing, as a new chain should bring it back to spec.
