Smoke at idle
 

Just got the 300SD in driving condition today! Adjusted valves,checked chain stretch (5 degrees), checked IP timing (24-25 degrees).
Only problem I have is lots of smoke at idle. Has good power, normal smoke under heavy pedal. Also shakes at idle unless heavily dosed with additive, but still smokes.
I've been working on this thing since late summer. Body work,interior, you name it. Don't let anyone tell you that a self employed mechanic has time to work on his own.
I'm ready to drive this car for a while;)

Had the same problem, but would come and go. I thought my neighbor was going to call the EPA it smoked so bad. :eek: Finally after trying to clean and calibrate the injectors myself, I bought new nozzles for the injectors, that I installed myself, and then took them to an injection shop for calibration. No more smoke, and no more rough idle. As somone had explained it to me, if the injectors leak, it actually causes preignition as you are dumping fuel into a cylinder that may not be at the optimal compression or injection cycle, hence alot of smoke. You might just take it down the road for a nice long drive. A lot of these old diesels seem to need some road miles at speed to clear the fuel system out. Be sure to use you additive to speed the cleanup of the injectors.
