240d stuck at full throttle!

My 83 240d stuck at full throttle while driving! Admittedly, when I collected my wits and shut off the engine the cars behind me were still blowing their horn to get me out of their way.

It seems that my car has a little damper on the injector pump that connects to the throttle linkage. This damper came off at the injector pump and while dangling at full throttle, grabbed something on the way back up, holding the throttle at that position.

What does this little contraption do? I just took it off and I see no difference in the operation. I don't see that part here so it looks like a dealer item. What if I just left it off?

UH.... at least find out what it does before you decide to leave it off.....:D

HINT : How many things have you seen the factory pay money to produce and install on cars which had no purpose ? :D

I think it's basically a shock absorber for the throttle linkage so that when you take your foot off the throttle it backs things down more slowly without slamming things against the stops. I have one on my 240D and it has given no trouble in the 60k miles that I have had the car. I'm like Leathermang - if the factory put it there, they probably had a reason to do it - like IP problems or air butterfly problems or linkage problems or .....fill in the blank. I worked for Ford Motor at one time and they thought a lot of engineers who came up with ideas that saved a penny a car (it's big money). This part probably is more like $.50 - and so be sure it is necessary in the long haul.

In the days of olde we used to call that a dash pot. The purpose of which was to prevent stalling under snap throttle situations.
