According to today's WSJ, MB will reintroduce a diesel powered 300E-bodied car in 2004 (2005 model year), at approx $50k. The MB spokesman said it reflects their market research that more people were starting to care abvout the fuel economy of their cars. (I read the other day that 40% of new vehicle sales in Europe are diesel powered, though the WSJ states that their emission policies are more lax).
The article states the car will average 34mpg, 20% better than the gasoline model.
Now, I'm not about to abandon my fully depreciated 1990 560SEL, but I am not about to forget the 150,000 pleasurable miles I put on my 1983 300SD either, which my mum drives to this day.
If this car has no trap oxidizer or other untried technology, I might consider actually buying a new one.....hopefully they will export a wagon variant.
