mineral wool hood pad?

Did anyone see This Old HOuse the other night? They were using mineral wool to insulate a house, and did an accoustic test that was unbelievable! They also make this stuff in pads. Best of all, its totally non-combustable (they melted a penny on it with a blow torch).

I'm thinking, if I can find some, it might be a great material for a hood pad.

any thoughts?

Any more info? Who makes it, etc. Sounds like a good idea. Likely a lot cheaper than "automotive" stuff. RT

I actually taped that episode.

It was described as made from the left-over sludge or waste material from the steel-making process.

If you go to their website or buy the magazine, the supplier is probably listed.

suginami,
I cant find it on their website, and the sites I've tried to find out about the stuff never have a price guide.
Could you look at the end of the video and find out who it was? It was a name that started with an "R" then "mineral wool."
Thanks!

OH, MY GOSH, maybe we need to be talking about how to clean/deodorize instead of worrying about sound deadening ...?

Here is a link to the soft foam insulation that they seem to use alot on the show, I know it's not the same, but they seem to not provide any information on the other stuff

I already checked. My wife taped over the episode.

That episode will come on again. They always do. I tape them every Satuday, so I'll let you know when it comes on.

I don't know anything about this board stuff.... but rockwool got a bad reputation in the housing industry when used as blown in insulation because over a few years it would compact... taking away much of the " R" value of its original installation....

I didn't see that episode but I've always wanted to enhance the sound deadening under the hood with a product called Dynamat. Here you go:

This stuff rules.

Peace,

That stuff looks good, but at $70, I'll pass.

I could kick myself. i turned on the TV 2 minutes late yesterday; the other PBS station was airing the episode, and I JUST missed it!
