Motor mount replacement - how tough and where to find step by step
 

I'm on a mission from God to being our 1984 300SD back to respectable shape and tight on funds. Are motor mounts something I can handle if I'm a decent wrench? What issues / special tools might I need to have?

I don't have access to a lift - just a floor jack / normal size garage.
Any good place to read about the procedure?

I'm wondering, though...how do you tell if the engine shocks are bad?

I'm sure I need to do my engine mounts; that's a "someday" project; I'll probably do the tranny mount at the same time...

the service writer had told me that I'd keep breaking the air cleaner bracket as long as the mounts were bad - the engine would just rock too much

makes sense I guess - I just got and air compressor and was wanting a project to try them out on :)

The newer glycol filled mounts are different (easier) -- they are semispherical, metal on top and tapered rubber underneath. It will be obvious if you have them. I know they are used on the 603, don't know of all W126 diesels have them or not.

They held in by one bolt from underneath and one bolt from the top. Loosen both, then jack engine and remove bolts, swap mount in, paying attention to the fact that there is a "key" in the top attachment. Screw bolts partway in, lower engine, and repeat for other side. Snug bolts up tight when engine is seated properly.

I watched Hans do this one afternoon (on the lift, of course) -- took maybe 20 min. Took longer to run the lift up and down that change the mounts! No fiddly little 6mm cap screws with dirt in the hole, up there under the bracket where you cannot reach them!

Those mounts sound interesting. Have a part # for one of them?

They are available on FastLane, but they are NOT interchangeable with the old style mounts, the frame is different. Too bad, I'd replace ALL of mine! I think they are like $60 apiece.
