ALL Diesel Owners, help.
I did some investigation about laws surrounding the posting of Cetane Ratings on Diesel pumps. Apparently the law is gas stations don't have to post the ratings, but if they DO the ratings must be correct. Anyways, with the increasing oil prices and the correlating increase of diesel automobiles, I think diesel owners should stand up for their rights and demand to know what we are paying for at the pump. Does anyone want to elaborate on why Cetane ratings are important?
Gasoline gets it's octane ratings. Let's get our cetane ratings and know what we're running in our beloved automobiles!!! So, the man from the Department of Agriculture Standards Division that I talked to agrees with me. The Standards Division is in charge of these laws. He says that if we want changed, to get as many diesel owners to agree as possible. So, please just write your name in a post and hopefully we can get a load of people to agree. Then i can compile the information and send it to the Dept of Agriculture. Thanks! Eric |

I also added it to dieseltruckresource.com (formerly :( known as dodge-diesel.org); you can go here to see the thread. On both, I asked to respond to the thread I posted on the individual sites, so Eric, you'll need to go over there. I figured that'd beat having a bunch of people coming over, registering, and posting once...although if they want to stick around, that'd be great  We'll see how it goes, eh? |
Cetane ratings
I would first like to better understand the cetane rating. I hear it is the equivalent of octane in gasoline.
With that said, I would like to see the cetane ratings not only on the dispensers, but the street signs - so you know what you are getting before pulling into the service station. |
i'd love to be able to see the ratings on the pumps,

Post cetane ratings, please!
Cetane is a specific linear hydrocarbon (don't remember which at the moment, think it is C20 but don't quote me!). The cetane rating is a measure of ignitibility compared to pure cetane (as octane is an anti-knock rating comparted to pure octane -- C8 linear hydrocarbon). I don't remember which direction the numbers go, but higher is better than lower for us -- 50 cetane is a good number (and typical of "good" fuels). Peter Frederick |
Yeah Baby!! Show me them cetane numbers!

Cetane ratings
psfred,
Thanks for the reply. I suspected higher ratings were better, but not sure what they mean. I understood the octane (learned from 'ping'). It seems the diesel stations in town are 45 cetane rating and marked on the pumps, but on highways they all seem to be 40 cetane - also marked. Thanks again! |
