Dumb Question
If the feeler gauge won't fit in between the rocker arm and the cam lobe then the valve is too tight or too loose? I can't get the correct feeler gauge to slide in between the rocker arm and the cam lobe. I suppose that this is my starting problem or at least a major contributor to it. Any advice?
Thanks, Oilslick |

Hopefully you're sure the lobe is opposite the follower(rocker). If that's the case, then your adjustment is too tight.

As Rick alluded to make sure the cam is indexed so that the lobe is pointed up and away from the follower. This is called having the cam on its "base circle". The idea being you are looking to set the clearance when the valve is closed the cam lobe is rotated away from the follower. When you are checking the clearances if the correct size feeler gauge doesn't fit you can select progressively smaller sizes and try them. This will tell you how far out of spec the engine is. I only mention this as it is interesting to note how tight the valves are for comparison when you do the valve adjustment again. Hope this helps. RT
