Check the owners manual, it should state the capacity.

Doesn't solve problem

Handbook only states 80L tank.

But does not account for any option codes

I have Option code 915, extended fuel tank.

I believe this is 90L.

But where how can I verify it?

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/5350/mbcodes.htm
Option Code 915
Kraftstoffbehaelter mit groesserem Inhalt
Fuel Tank with Increased Capacity

however, the site doesn't list capacity. try googling the above info...

That might be one to go to a dealer and try to get them to look it up for you.

Dealer doesn't know

Dealer doesn't know. This is the interesting part.

The dealer gave me a list from the Star-Network

Next to option code 915, it said 90L

But no service department has been able to verify this information.

That's why I'm posting the question here.

I googled for hours..no success.

1998 300TD

Nice car. I have one too. Why don't you run the gague down a few miles past the warning light, take it to a truck stop, siphon out the remaining fuel into a gerry can and fill-er-up? What am I missing?

Allready tried something similar

I ran the car past the bottom of the Empty for about 30 miles

and when I filled it up it was still only 20.6 Gallons.

80L is 21.1 Gal
90L is 23.5 Gal

So fuel gage is definently wrong. Should be 2.5Gal when the light comes on.

When the light comes on I have used 16.5 Gal.

Even if I have a 80L fuel tank, the light shouldn't come on until 21.1-2.5Gal=18.6 Gal.

Since you have the same car what kind of fuel tank do you have?

21.1 or 23.5?

Also in the owner manual you should see if you have option code 915.

My old 95 E300D had 23.5 Gal

Option Code

OK, I am a neophyte on this subject. The "delivery ticket" inside the owner's manual has a lot of 3 digit numbers printed on the bottom. One of these numbers is 915. However, I am almost certain that my E300 only holds 21 gal. Damnit! Now I will have to check.

Well maybe you too have a 90L tank

Would appreciate if you tell me what you have and what your experience is with respect to

When does the yellow light come on? (17-18 Gal)

And do you have the 915 Delivery Code?

Light

Last time my light came on and I immediately fueled, I forced 16.5 gallons into the tank, as I recall. I am close to empty now, so I can probably let you know Monday how much I take on when the light comes on (duck hunting in another vehicle until then).

I don't know if I have this option or not. As I said, there are alot of three digit numbers on the bottom of the "delivery ticket". One of the numbers is 915. This is the blue and white ticket that came with the car that has german writing the top and the type of tires and headlights in english. The owners manual itself doesn't mention this option as you have previously posted. I will do some research and find out if I have this option.

Appreciate your help

Mine also has option 915 on the blue and white delivery sheet.

But when I got the Master Vehicle Inquiry when I bought the car it came with a description of all of these codes.

Code 915 was equal to 90L tank inc reserve

But I've not been able to verify this elsewhere other than with a google search.

It said that option code 915 means extended fuel tank.

so if all of the 320s delivered to the us has 80L.

It makes sence that all the Diesels are delivered with 90L
as Diesel fuel stops are not so common here in the states.

Owner's manual is not so good explaining this, neither is the local dealership.

So if you find out something please let me know.

Finally someone that understands my concerns. :-D

Hmmm... I'm too lazy to walk down to the car and check option codes. But I'm confident mine has the 80L tank. I can reliably put in 19gal if I drive a few miles after the low fuel light comes on. So the 21.1 gal capacity feels about right.
