240D tachometer conversion.... is it possible?

Has anybody successfully adapted 300D speedo/tach guage to fit the 240D?

Instrument cluster fits the dash, but what about signal/sender unit for the tachometer?

Another question is

Did any 240d's come with tach ?

If yes, were there two designs ? One mechanical out of the rear of the IP... and the other electrical run perhaps off the TDC finder?

I would really like to have one instead of my non working clock...

Why?

Like my 240 dash array MUCH more, and clocks can be put right fairly easily (do a site search).

The whole idea of a tach on a diesel, particularly one with an auto transmission is like, what?

Repeat...MUCH easier to get the clock running than to do the transplant you contemplate.

Jim, You are correct on all the parameters which you state or assumed....

However, my car is a manual transmission...

And, If the speedo goes out you can gauge your speed just fine with a tach until you get the speedo fixed...

I would never bother FIXING a MB Clock,,, because it is attached to the battery...

I can get Quartz clocks which run for a year on a hearing aid battery which will not be affected by disconnecting the car's battery....
I could place it into the MB face and no one would know the difference..... presto ! Woodcraft sells those clocks with all sorts of options for color and face style for $8.... very pretty....

Power band.... that's what tachometer measures.

Useful for climbing hills and pulling out tree stumps.... where you dont want to lug the engine at low rpm's, even downshifting the automatic for increased power.

Am guessing that my 240 standard shift gets optimum performance between 2500 and 3000 rpm.

Once again, has anybody seen or done a tach conversion from 300D to 240D? For me it's a must have item.

Hey leatherman, if you got used to driving by the tach I'll bet you didnt miss the speedometer at all.

Equipped with just a speedometer, am always shifting according to the little dots at varyious speeds.... especially when going in and out of 2nd and 3rd.

I think a Dynomometer measures power at specific rpms.. then the chart of that would be the 'power band'..

The tach only measures RPM... you have to know what RPM you want to be in from charts from the Factory Shop manual or other sources....

Yes, it was a VW Karman Ghia , drove it for years without the speedo... without a fuel gauge either... bummer...
