Question Sending unit in; gauge still wavering

I got the sending unit nice and cleaned up. Prior to installing it in the car, I tested it and it appeared to be working fine.

However, after installing it and starting the car up, even with the car sitting at idle (it's still on jackstands ), the gauge wavered as it had before. For the most part, it's showing about 1/4 full, and the reserve light is lit...

Any ideas on what else to check? I'm 99.99% sure that the sender's fine...

Thanks in advance!

I suspect the sending unit is picking up a ground from some where. I had written down the resistances that the sending unit puts out in different positions, but I can't find it . May be someone else has the numbers. That way you can make sure the gauge is OK. You might want to look at maybe cable damage or a ground. YOu could check the sending unit again. Those terminals should be isolated from ground. If you measure with an ohm-meter, you should not see a low resistence between the terminal and the can or frame of the sending unit.

I would have to agree with Peter. Ot sounds like the wire heading to the guage might be shorting somewhere or even have a partial break.
Try isolating that wire and testing it for a short.
