Question Clicking noise from shifter

On my 81 300SD, while driving around town, I have a clicking sound coming from the shifter. Very little noise under acceleration, none at deceleration, mostly at a coast. What could this be? Flex joint? U-joint?
Also have rough idle when hot. Rack pin? What is the part #.
Thanks, Jeff

Clicking or rattling shifter is probably the busing at the base of the lever. Mine buzzes terribly, but I'm waiting until I get the engine mounts and some other stuff first.

Rack pin should be adjusted first, look for other posts (rack pin is probably available from FastLane on this site, too).

I'm going to put my money on a bad shifter bushing (or two). There is one towards the front of the linkage and one at the rear. The front one is a bear to do, the rear isn't so bad. They're only a couple bucks a piece so get a few and keep them around for future needs!

Guess I should have been more specific. The clicking seems to follow the speed of the car. Just sounds like it is coming from shifter. Also can feel it in the shifter.
Thanks, Jeff

Road speed or engine speed? The same at, say, 40 mph in second AND third, or different?

The noise seems to follow road speed. Almost sounds like a bearing clicking. Maybe the center bearing going south.
Whatever it is, it'll have to wait for warmer weather. It,s like 18 degrees out right now. Forecast is for 10-12. Oh well, they told me when I moved to AR, if you don't like the weather, just wait till tomorrow, it'll be different.
Thanks, Jeff

Jeff:

If it is road speed related, on coast only, I'd suspect the driveline. If it sounds very much like every other wheel revolution, it can be the rear wheel bearings (they are sealed double-race ball bearings in the control arm).

Be glad it is as warm as it is there -- current temp is -2F, going as low as -5 tonight, we MAY see 18 tomorrow! Warmer than where I used to live, though -- never gets up to 0F in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario this time of year!
