Help! Haynes Manual doesn't cover my problem!

There is a popping noise coming from the forward floor of the passenger side of my "82 240D. What is the "rod" that mounts just beneath the big spring behind the wheel and also mounts to the forward floor on the passenger side. There is a bolt "backing out" of the end of this "rod". While driving I hear a flapping sound from this side. Can any of you nice folks give me some pointers on this?

Thanks,
Oilslick

I'm not sure, but it sounds like you're talking about the anti-sway bar...and that bolt should NOT be loose. That's what is "popping", I'm sure. You'll probably need a new bolt...the movement has probably ruined the threads on the existing one.

That rod is called different names (it is not the sway bar). I call it the track rod. It is also called the guide rod. Is the "mount" at the rear most end of the rod new? If it is then it does not sound like whoever replaced it tighted it up like they should have. You may want to put some blue Locktite on the fasteners.

Thanks!

The popping and flapping has stopped. I will keep a check on teh bolts to see if they try to escape.

Thanks
