S350 with periods of blue smoke

Well let me set it up. 94' S350 with 62000 miles. Only 3000 miles since the engine was rebuilt.

Sometimes when at idle, the engine will stutter like it's missing a beat or something. Also at that time, huge clouds of blue smoke will come out. I know this signals burning too much oil, but it doesn't smoke blue all the time. Only sometimes when it's at idle and it stutters.

Checked the oil level and it was still between min and max, but right near minimum.

So is it something serious to worry about?

Yeah, that is a classic, text-book symptom of that engine when it is about to self-destruct. Engine grunts, then emits alot of smoke.

Strange being that there is only 3,000 miles on the rebuild, take it back.

I am going to be taking it back this week since I was going to get an oil change. The thing that I don't understand is why it would be doing this again after the rebuild. It's been less than a year.

Sound like it is over fueling. Could be injectors.

An independent shop that works on diesels rebuilt it. I don't know if they cleaned out the crossover pipe.

Blue smoke = oil, not injectors.

Sounds like they need to work on that engine again.

Good luck,

Yes well it has been less than a year since the rebuild and they did give a one year warranty on everything they did.

Ouch, I would hate to be that shop and see you coming back.... Hey Old South, did you ever get the EGR blockoff to work on yours? If the EGR system is the achilles heel of the 3.5 motor, disabling it and a new motor should make for one hell of a car. I would love a 350SDL IF I could cure the problem without tearing into the motor for rods, etc. RT

I hope they warranty what they didn't do to. For example, if they didn't change ALL the rods and different rod is bending....

Yep. The only way to do it where the computer does not cut boost is to change the wastegate on the turbo to a pressure control instead of a vacuum control thereby bypassing the computer. Plumb the turbo to the intake maniford and install a manual boost pressure control inline from the intake to the turbo, then block off the EGR and/or plug the vacuum line to it.

Old South

I would like more specifics on how you accomplished this modification. How the computer works, how the turbo wastegate control was changed, etc. Email to me if you don't want to post here. Thanks, RT

My '91 350 SDL will do this once in a while in very cold weather, only after having cold soaked over a long weeked (a few days). Burns no oil at all between 4000 mile changes and runs well otherwise (although I wish for about 50 more HP)

Agreeing with Old South ... I think the blue is just barely blue (on mine) ... looks more whitish/gray and sounds like an injector or fuel has pooled somewhere ...

I removed and cleaned the crossover and the intake manifold ... if you know the new design (assumption) rods were installed, take a look at the crossover and intake tract ... and, clean it ... you will likely be amazed at the gunk.

The reason I thought it was overfueling is that mine did the same thing when we went to Breckenridge last year. Would miss at idle and low rpms and smoke something terrible. It was a bluish-black smoke so thick you could not see the car behind you. Came back down to 5000' and it stopped doing it. Dealer said either it was the ALDA or bad spray pattern from the injectors. Works fine in Louisiana so I did not replace anything.

Sounds like you need to take it back...mine will blow a little white smoke at start up(but I am notorious for not letting the engine glow for more than 3-4 seconds)..my car, I have noticed burns about 1/2 quart betwenn 5K oil changes...but ONLY if you do not fill it up to the absolute fill mark...I find that it will burn the extra oil if I pour the entire 8.5 quarts in it..instead I just put eight quarts in

another thing I have noticed..under high highway speeds 90-100 the car will burn more oil...to the tune of about a quart in 2200 miles or so...but as soon as I return to city driving the regular consumption comes back

and remember my car had a complete long block replacement(from valve cover to oil pan) about 56K miles ago

I think(someone correct me if I am wrong) MB will cover parts and labor of defective parts for 1 year unlimited mileage...but I guess the burden of proof might be on you to prove to MB that the job was done right by the Independent shop...which I am sure won't be easy when you are basically asking them to cover a $9000 repair bill

MB won't do anything for this. They flat out refused that anything was wrong with the engine and since the car was out of warranty, they wouldn't do anything about it.

I don't trust any dealership with the car at all.
