Sorry Sixto, I've never messed with that so I can't help you. Gsxr may be able to help you.

You need to turn the engine to approximately 15 degrees ATDC, where the timing should be set. If dead on, the tool will insert & lock. if not, you'll need to turn to about 13 ATDC and creep it forward a half-degree at a time until it goes in & locks. When it does, the reading at the TDC pointer is your IP timing setting. DO NOT turn the engine with the tool locked in place or you will damage the IP! Let me know if you have any questions...

Does the whole pin diameter slip into a detent in the rotating arm of the IP or does the slot in the tip of the pin engage a raised... dang, I'm out of technical terms... lip across the arm?
If the slot engages a lip, how do you clock the tool? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Uh - yeah, I think so! The little groove on the end of the pin latches onto a "tooth", or raised "lip", on some mysterious part of the IP innards. I'm told that creative types can use a mirror to look inside the hole, and apporximate where it is "centered", to time the IP without the tool. I say the thing is cheap enough, just buy it! But I suppose for a 1-time check/adjust the mirror method is acceptable.
For actual R&R of the IP you really do need the lock, AND you really should have the metal basket that holds the timing device in place (these often get removed permanently during vacuum pump replacement.) A new one can be bought for ~$5 as a special order "tool" from the dealer, p/n 601-589-05-14-00. HTH, |

Doh! It's all in 07.1-200.
Just as you said, Dave, except MB calls the tooth a lug What I plan to do is set the crank to 15 ATDC (or 14 ATDC if the adrenaline's flowing) and use the IP adjustment mechanism to get the pin to engage. Sound good? How's Boise? Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Bingo - that's the idea. It would be nice to see where it's set now, although that could take a good bit of time with rotating the engine & whatnot. Otherwise, yep, set crank to 14, loosen the 3 mounting bolts & adjuster lock, and rotate until the lock slips into place. Then tighten it all down & go for a drive. Remember to NOT turn the engine with the tool in place...
Good luck, |
