Your coldest unassisted start...

When I got into my car last Wednesday morning in Northern NY, I thought I was seeing things. After realizing how cold I was, I believed that it truely was -17 outside. For sure I thought I would need to plug-er-in.

I gave it a shot anyway...glow plug light on...glowplug light out...turn the key...first crank...engine runs!!!

Now I thought I was seeing and hearing things. She sure was a bit cranky for the first few minutes. But she ran like a champ the rest of the day.

What is the coldest you have you been able to start your car with out extra help?

For me it,,,, is about 10°F last October when we had a cold spell,,,, I was surprised that it would start,,,, Another time it was 15°F,,,,, and it started right up. Most other times I couldn't get my car started at 40°F because I had a bad battery. So as far as I am concerned the most important thing for starting when really cold is the condition of the battery,,,, it really makes a HUGE difference.

For me, it was about 3 years ago. Official temp (at airport) was -10 F, but I think it was about -7 or -8 here. Actually, I've never had a problem so far (knock on zebrano)--about 5 Michigan winters, with many mornings 0 to 20. Below 0 is pretty rare here.

11 degrees Thursday am -- still dark -- new glow plugs in 85 300D with 160K. One cycle of glows and fired on first turn. Idle pretty smooth.

coldest start

an 84 td started at about 10 degrees after an overnight low of a few degrees below zero. but it took a hell of a lot cranking. seemed like the battery just wasn't able to spin the engine fast enough.

I think the high was +8F yesterday and after all day, glowplug light off, wait 10 seconds and bang - off she goes.

Great compression, 1.5yr battery and Syn oil.

-8 degrees F. Not real happy but started right up.

Chicago and Michigan winters often test my car (also knock on zebrano) but I do not remember the last time I had a starting problem.

Hope my streak continues.

-5F so far for the 87 -- one glowplug cycle and one revolution and it was running. No power for a while, but running.

No such luck with the Volvo -- starter is dying, won't crank fast enough to start, and the 220D is inert until it warms up.

The temp here in southern Indiana this morning was -1 and I got both of my cars started with no trouble. I posted this on another thread, but the problem I have had is with fuel filters. I think this is the first winter my 300sd has seen north of Tampa Bay in all of it's 19 years. The power service that I have added over the last week has cleaned all the crap out of the tank and into the fuel filter. I have changed the fuel filter twice since last Friday. I think this is also the first time this car has had any type of fuel additive in the tank. I picked up extra filters yesterday just in case.

I also saw lots of Ford, Dodge, and Chevy trucks stalled or being towed yesterday as I drove half way across southern Illinois. The Ford dealer near my house had 4 powerstrokes in the shop today, with fuel or glowplug problems. The tech at Ford was telling me that Ford recomends in temps below 10' F that powerstroke owners change the oil from 15-40 to 10-30. Why don't these guys just use the 5-40 syn, and solve the problem.

Keep warm!!!

My '83 300SD starts just fine in weather as cold as 0 degrees Farenheit. Kristen's car just the same. Here in Cincinnati it's been about 0 or -1*F at night and neither of us have any problems in the morning, although I've been driving the 420SEL because the heat in that thing is so damn good it'll toast you out of the car even in 0 degree weather!! Very much different from my '83 SD.

Yeah, that new plate looks like an amateur attempt at "high art" that got left in the sun too long -- I wonder who's 1960s Kodak photo they used for the background? I remember lots of photos faded away to faint yellow/green from those days.......

I'm from Noblesville.

I got all my new plates this month. I agree they are not attractive and I think the www.in.gov is ridiculous. Anyone wanting the domain could find it easily with a simple search. They replaced a motto with this. But, the worst part of the new plates is that they are more difficult to read. The numbers are not as easily discerned. And at any normal distance the background simply looks like a faded pic.
