Angry Slipping Starter??

Just when I thought nothing would go wrong...

I started my car as usual and as usual it started strongly and instantly. All good I thought. Off I went.

Stopped to get some breakfast, came back to the car, glow light out, cranked and all I could hear was something spinning that I thought was the starter.

The engine didn't crank.

I thought to myself "Great.... im stranded for the first time".

Retried it and it started up just fine and it hasn't done it again.

I've heard of the starter just ticking and not doing anything. However, this time im quite sure it just spun freely.

Any ideas?

Do I need some sort of starter clutch or something? or a new starter? ............

Sounds like a thread we had going just a few days ago. The starter drive is your problem. During cold weather this is a common problem. If it continues to do this, just change the drive.

I just did a search (didn't think that it was a common problem. I've heard of starters not doing anything however didn't think it could slip)

If it does it again then I'm just gonna have the starter replaced I think.

Hit the starter with a hammer next time it happens, it will last for another few months.

Be careful if you hit the starter with a hammer, make sure to not damage the case, since many places won’t return your core charge if the cause is damaged.

My starter does that occasionally, but only when it's VERY cold outside...Like last night--6 degrees F!!! BRRRR!!! It only does it once or twice, then it starts normally. I'll deal with it eventually, but I've got other items that are higher on the priority-fix list.
