Starter never recovered from the water -ADVICE
Hello everyone,
About 2 months ago, I went through a large water spot, not sure but water was pretty deep. My rebuilt bosch starter(about 3 years old), had never ever had a problem. Now, two months later, it seems to not engage all the time *OR* slip off the engagement. Any suggestions on what may need replacing or cleaning to get it back to snuff. Hate to replace it, since it's not very old. Michael |
Starter engagement
A couple years ago I steam cleaned my '83 TD engine and water got in the starter. I didn't know it at the time but, 3 months later the starter began to hang up. When I took it apart the solenoid was rusted and would not push the starter gear to engage the flywheel. My starter was 15 years old so I replaced it.
If you can remove the solenoid, clean and lubricate the piston and pivots. You may need an impact wrench to remove the 2 solenoid screws. Also, don't forget about the neutral safety switch on an automatic tranny. Sometimes a faulty/misadjusted switch will disable the starter. In this case though the starter will not turn at all. |
Yea,
Rust is a possibility... it did act up from the moment water got inside.. obviously removal is required. REmoval in my apartment world may be replacement! Michael |
my 79 240 stick had starter problems. i spent thousands on starters , ring gears, replaced the bendix, tow jobs, batteries, time and frustration.
the problem was the 30 dollar key switch. investigate before you spend any cash. |
Back in the old days... cars and trucks had a key and a starter button on the dash... or the starter button would be on the floor...
If you had this with a diesel (except for locking steering wheels ) you could start and get home in an electrical emergency... It would be very simple to do... and would also (if you hid it) be an extra theft prevention device... they hot wire the car... and ???? it won't start ( COOL )...... And it isolates any problem checking... by making the key circuit a seperate thing completely... |
the two long bolts that hold the stator housing to the head must get a good connection. if they are corroded you won't get a good ground and the starter won't work.

The overrunning clutch may be shot, and can be replaced easily after removing the starter. I assume you are getting the screech and/or starter just spins, but not the engine?
Not bad, but getting that starter out parked at the curb can be a *****..... PEter |
Been thera, done that.
