If someone made a stained and laminated dual cup holder like the one in the link, I'd buy it. So, if anyone wants to make a nice one for themselves and wouldn't mind making a second while they're at it, let me know how much you want. I don't know why the folks at Mercedes even bothered putting that drink indentation on the glovebox door.

I just went and got one of the Thermos mugs... I am thinking about making one of the holders but feel it should be a fancier wood more the color of the Zebrano.... I have some dried Mesquite.. my favorite wood... will let yall know of any progress...
The website says both Target and Walmart carry it... but the price is standardised it looks like ( read fixed )... I got mine at Target, but they place them (thermos, stanley, etc) in the outdoors section... they put their brand of mug in the automotive part... not as nice and much smaller handle... |

I agree that wood holder looks real nice, but the problem is that I'm a cheapskate. I just went and bought a cheap plastic two cup holder from wal-mart after spilling my first drink. The two holders are adjustable and the whole unit fits adequately. It doesn't look 1/10th as nice as the wood, but it is easily removed to under the seat or trunk if not needed, and has worked well. I don't like the idea of drilling or screwing a holder in and I don't have the tools to make a nice wood one like that. The one I bought cost around 10 bucks.

Me too, I would not pay that either... but some people have the money and are not as tight as you and I... thank goodness for that....

My wife came home the other day with one of the walmart cup holders. She sang it's praises but I think it undermines the aesthetic integrity of the vehicle. (and she's an artist!)
I'm frugal also and wouldn't pay $75 for a holder I could make out of $5 worth of wood, but I just couldn't use the walmart model that really belongs in a Yugo.

The Target brand mug which looked sorta like the Thermos one above had a plastic liner and did not have the nice type non slosh lid ... The Thermos mug (20oz) which I got was $20....but it has five year warranty and is stainless steel double walled vacuum inbetween... the other had foam in side...

Router Bit:
They make a router bit for plunge router, that is duel purpose.
It has a point on the end and then is a flush trim bit. This way you just plunge into board thru the template, and it drills the hole then the flush trim will trim to the template Oh yes. There is a top pilot bearing that ride's against template and duplicate it on your stock. Then chuck in a round over bit, roll sharp edges sand and stain. Tip, template has to be perfect other wise all ruff spot will transfer to stock. Good luck. Charlie |

how is this one attached to the car? is it free-floating, or are there legs somewhere on it? I dont see any nail-holes anywhere.
You guys with a template, etc, feel free to post your plan pics!

I am working on a new template, which is an improvement over my previous version. I will try posting a picture when I complete it.

i'm going to make one this weekend. i've got some oak, router, and hole saw the right size. i was thinking it would be free standing so that it could be stashed under the seat. i think i will use two vertical pieces of oak at either end to support the base. i will dowel these in, no hardware, and you won't be able to see them from the top.

I made a cheap one also, although it looks great. I used thin plywood, about 1/8th inch, made the bottom the same size as the bottom of the opening, made the top much shorter (just long enough for two holes for drinks, plus a little)made the sides the same depth as the opening and as short as the top. Made front and back to enclose cut out holes. Painted inside flat black and covered entire unit with vinyl that closely matches interior color of car (blue).Used Contact cement. Looks great and works gOOOOOd. Lee
ps The little area behind the cup holder is still usable and the holder doesn't move because of the base being the same size as the hole |

for the W124 and perhaps the W123
I just bought and installed two air-vent cup holders that work perfect.
The details are at this thread: Idea for W124 drink holders |
