I think I am going to make one of those this week, since I don't have anything else better to do. I can start making those, and sell them for a lot less than that. I am sure one can be made in less than an hour for only a few dollars.

A jig with a good plunge router and you might have it down to about two minutes...

Certainly a less costly approach than I took. I had a custom one made at www.drinkholders.com, black plastic and zebrano wood inlay. It fits perfect in the console, like this one. Holds some pretty big cups, 44 oz, and has held up very well, but cost $50.

I've been using a Nissan thermos cup for a couple of years now.It works great in the Turtle but it did tip over in the CE,I think it had something to do with the CE actually being able to accelerate . Thermos cup JMM600 The ultimate desk cup fits perfectly in the console and could be anchored from tipping rearward with a small piece of wood across the console.

I have my templete almost complete, and now I need to did out my jig saw and router. I am almost thinking if I bought one of those Roto-Zip things so I could do it even faster. I will post a picture of my prototype when I complete it.

I had the same idea also. What kind of wood are you using? Have you considered some kind of flip over model that would allow the back or front sections to be raised for access to the tray?

I have access to the Mfg. Eng's lab. I heard some people just brought some design (CAD or something) and they had some students who just love doing these things build the design on their machines for them..

I really want a sliding box like the late-124's box for my car...

However I might make a cup holder first since it's a lot simpler. Maybe not from wood though.

I just made mine out of a scrap of pine board I had laying around. The holes didn't come out very good, but it's mostly because I had problems with the jig saw. I think once I get a Roto-Zip, I should be able to get the nice holes.

Nice

I think that is nice but what could a guy with a 124 do? I'm looking around and with that roll-top desk under the armrest there are very limited options.

Will post when I come up with something. So far it's "hang a holder" on the notch on the door. Not elegant at all.

Hey Eric, the rotozip will only be as accurate as the jig saw because there is nothing to guide it to cut a perfect circle.A hole saw of the appropriate diameter (to fit the cup's base)is the easiest way to cut an accurate circle.A coping saw would also be more accurate than a jig saw, but I wouldn't want to try that on a piece of oak. The e-bay holder looks like it was made with two holes drilled into it and then a slot cut between them with a saw.I've been a woodworker for many years and I've learned that you can only be as accurate as your tools, the jig saw and belt sander are ,IMHO,just slightly more accurate than my chain saw .My wife keeps bugging me that she has no place to rest her morning coffee,so I might have to make something similar for her car.
Hey 95*E300, does the roll top roll towards the rear? The thermos cup I use might fit in there, though it does interfere with using the arm rest. The trouble with the door mounted cup holders,I would forget that there is still coffee in the cup and it would get launched across the car when I got out and then shut the door

Its probably already copyrighted, it isnt very hard to do anyway.

Its probably worth 75 bucks because its oak and it looks stained. Pretty nice, I spill my tea every morning on myself.

Rolltop desk for sale - need cup holder

My downstairs roll-top desk (center 'almost console' in place of the glove box) rolls toward the rear of the cockpit. I have toyed with a "drop-in" that would hold and contain a spill. The fuzzy interior of the little desk does not look like it would bear a dribble.

What does this thermos thing look like? It might work. Let me know or email a pix.

M~

Eric, If you have a router I suggest you use that... with it you can also chamfer the edge and it will be smoother than the rotozip type of bit..what counts is the quality of the jig you make.... that is what determines the smoothness and accuracy of the hole with either the router or the rotozip type tool... I got my rotozip type tool at harbor freight... and use it for sheetrock cutting... several makers have that tool now... with the upcut spiral bits...

95E300, here they are, very pretty I think...

Yes , that's the one Leathermang- JMM600. There's about a 1/2 inch space side to side using that cup in both my cars.To clean up spills in the console the carpet will come right out from the bottom and you can wash it in the sink, but if it's mouse fur then it would be a pain to get clean. The list price seems awful high for that cup though,I paid $30 Cdn for it so you might want to shop around.
