Liquid-Vac the Super Bowl and me
Ok, I'm new but my search didn't furn up much on the Liquid-Vac. Here goes:
I bought one and used it during Super Bowl halftime (for real) and completed the entire oil change - ok it was a little longer halftime but it (the oil change) was great! Slurpped it up in short order! I read the MB recommendation that ONLY a vacuum extraction of oil via the dipstick was in order. With that BIG tube it took only a few minutes. The oil was up to operational temperature before I started - and air temp was in the low 40F degrees. The oil flowed smoothly and didn't burn the tubing at all. Some caution: Ok - I don't recommend you "sticking" the little tube down the dipstick tube - too much risk of hitting the great "unknown". However the big tubing will interface (read that jam into) the stick tube w/o a problem and stay there throughout the entire operation. MB says the dipstick tube goes almost to the bottom of the pan and only negligable oil will remain. Assuming you don't worry about sluge - that is ok. MB recommeds a $2300 rig that uses compressed air to create a vacuum. The Liquid-Vac costs $50 and is stout - thick plastic that does not collapse. It holds 2 gallons which should take care of the diesel crowd! My 2 cents. |

You'll get search results if you use 'liquivac' without a 'd.'

Whatever
I don't know how the underside of your vehicle is set up, do you need to remove a panel to access the drain plug? If not I would change the oil the old fashioned way ; crawl under there! This will help to ensure complete draining helping to remove the sludge.
Just my five cents worth. thebern

FWIW, the $2,300 "rig" from MB is indeed a Godsend to have in a shop. It's made in Germany (Deutsche-Tecalemit) and will empty a large sump (read M120 V-12 engine which holds 10.7qts) in practically no time. When I have a service which also requires an oil and filter change, I remove the engine oil fill cap first, then loosen the filter up and put the hose down the dipstick tube. In the meantime, I clean the filter housing and install the new element and by that time, the oil is all removed and the car's waiting for fresh stuff! At home, I have a smaller contraption I bought at West Marine. It hooks to your car's battery terminals and has a little electric motor which draws the oil from the sump. Not as fast as the air-powered setup, but darn close. I got the little oil extractor for about $150. Made by Jabsco I think.

The underside...
The underside of the E300 does indeed have a "belly pan" that must be removed for plug draining. The MB information I read indicates that a vacuum extraction was the ONLY approved MB method. Sludge is another subject. If the oil is changed regularly then I don't how you could find much in there if the filter is working.
Maybe someone else who had to remove a pan and "look" at sludge will enlighten me. I always understood that sludge was a byproduct of heat, time, and oil breakdown. Oil left for 15-30K miles and run hot all the time would sludge. Synthetics don't do so I'm told. However, I like the suction method of extraction for other reasons. With Mobil 1 in my gas cars (and now the diesel MB) and changed regularly I don't ever expect to find sludge. |

Interesting that suction is the only approved method yet an oil drain plug is provided.

Drain plug
Yes, there's still a drain plug. But with the new MBs not having a dipstick, who knows, maybe the drain plug is the next to go
