Purchase of 83 300SD

I have found an 83 300SD that is in pretty good shape. Has had new and used parts put on it that look good. Has alot of parts that go with it. Totally new interior ready to be installed. Engine runs pretty well except blue smoke when first started and misses slightly on acceleration. Smoke and missing leaves at about 50 mph. or at higher rpms. Not as much power as I think it probably has when running well. Could fuel distributor be the problem? Mechanic said he has put in all new injectors. Drives well. I still need to check it out more, but the mechanic that owns it just buys older cars and sells them. He want $1200. It has 175,000 miles on it. I want to continue to fix it up and get it in top condition. Is it worth it? I would like to be able to drive it for work, etc... Are older Mercedes reliable? Colder climates? How long will the engine last if taken care of and has good compression? I know this is alot but I am looking at the car to replace a gas guzzler.

It's worth buying for $1200, and it's a big plus if it comes with a new interior. If the engine is in good shape, you should be able o get at least another 175,000 out of the engine with oil changes every 3,000 miles.

My son is a student in Cambridge, Mass and has 365,000 on the '83 300D he is driving. He is still getting 25 to 29 mpg and adds a quart of oil between 5,000 mile changes. The car has a block heater but he has no place to plug it in, parking being at a premium there. This winter he has had one morning (20 below) when it wouldn't start.

My daughter also drives a 123 series 300D and she and I recently gave it a winter tune-up. Air & fuel filters, new injectors, valve adjustment, new glow plugs and I've ordered a block heater to help her with starting. She lives in the mountains in the Shenandoah Valley. I paid $1,000 for the car two years ago and it had 145,000 miles on it at that time.

$1200 is what these cars are worth if the engine and transmission are in decent shape.

For that price- I would purchase it if the car is rust free. I had the opportunity to purchase a excellent running and driving, rust free, 1983 300SD last summer for $1800. Interior was like new, it had 224K, but had hail damage. Despite that, I should have bought it.

Even if the engine falls out tomorrow, you should be able to recover $1,200 by parting it out. Seems like an interesting deal. Just don't expect the A/C to give you frostbite this summer.
